I also spend some time working on abstract art when I need to give my ears a little break. :)</span></span></span></span></p><p style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br /></p><p style="font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="border: none; display: inline-block; padding: 0cm;"><span style="font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><span style="color: #454545;">I come from the Czech republic where I studied music since childhood. It was a pretty long journey as I started playing recorder when I was four. I have played the piano since I was six and then I moved to playing oboe as well. I was lucky because when it comes to music education in my home country you can find a lot of music schools for all ages. So I started with elementary school which is basically a music primary school where you can learn a very basic music theory, also singing and a music instrument of your own choosing. When I was 15 I got accepted to a music conservatoire in my hometown Pardubice where I studied classical music and an oboe playing and after six years I went to Janacek’s Academy of Performing Arts in Brno where I got quite a lot of practise in orchestral playing and chamber music.</span></span></span></span></p><p style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br /></p><p style="font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="border: none; display: inline-block; padding: 0cm;"><span style="font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><span style="color: #454545;">While I was studying at the Academy I was already pretty much sure about my dream job. I didn’t want to be an oboe player in a symphonic orchestra or a teacher. I had a massive urge to create music so I decided to start writing my own music. While I studied the conservatoire in Pardubice I met a lot of great musicians and same creative beings like myself who wanted to establish a band focused on Celtic music.</span></span></span></span></p><p style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br /></p><p style="font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="border: none; display: inline-block; padding: 0cm;"><span style="font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><span style="color: #454545;">So in 2008 me and my friend Stepan Honc (guitarist) along with two other friends (a violinist and a percussionist) from the conservatoire founded a band called Perkelt. We started off with our own arrangements of old medieval tunes from the 13th century and then we slowly moved onto making our own tunes with a Celtic folk vibe. For a while we used to call our style a Celtic-medieval speed folk as we were pretty wild young students who loved super energising upbeat music so it was pretty normal for us to play a two hour set full of insanely fast songs without taking a single break. :)</span></span></span></span></p><p style="font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="border: none; display: inline-block; padding: 0cm;"><span style="font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><span style="color: #454545;">In 2010 we sadly came across a massive barrier.</span></span></span></span></p><p style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br /></p><p style="font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="border: none; display: inline-block; padding: 0cm;"><span style="font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><span style="color: #454545;">We discovered that we can’t make full living out of making music and playing gigs in the Czech Republic. You see in the Czech Republic when it comes to public events as gigging opportunities for young folk bands, musicians are just constantly taken for granted and they never seem to get any respect or recognition for their work. To many people in the Czech Republic “being a musician” doesn’t even mean to have an actual job. They just never get paid and if they do it is a pittance which barely covers their travel costs. It’s outrageous.. I am not gonna dig deep into this problem as it’s not the main subject of this interview but it is a clear explanation why in 2011 me and my bandmate Stepan decided to leave our home country and move to London.</span></span></span></span></p><p style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br /></p><p style="font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="border: none; display: inline-block; padding: 0cm;"><span style="font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><span style="color: #454545;">It was a fresh start and just living, creating, playing music and meeting other musicians gave us a big dose of hope for a better future and also a great energy to keep doing what we always loved doing.</span></span></span></span></p><p style="font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="border: none; display: inline-block; padding: 0cm;"><span style="font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><span style="color: #454545;">It wasn’t an easy journey but it was worth it!</span></span></span></span></p><p style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br /></p><p style="font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="border: none; display: inline-block; padding: 0cm;"><span style="font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><span style="color: #454545;">In the last nine years I have played (not kidding) hundreds of great gigs and I met lots of great musicians and exciting people. Unique and Super Memorable!!</span></span></span></span></p><p style="font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="border: none; display: inline-block; padding: 0cm;"><span style="font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><span style="color: #454545;">I have to say he taught me some new pretty cool ways of making music which I didn’t really have the guts to try until I came into his studio in Clapham. You see when it comes to recording myself I am pretty old fashioned. I am pretty stuck with my own routines. Firstly I write my music on a piece of paper, usually scores first then the lyrics. Then I make a list of instruments which I would like to record, then I write the structure of the piece, solos for instrumental parts and lastly I work on the intro and outro of the song. And after all these preparations I go to switch on the computer, set up the mics and press record.</span></span></span></span></p><p style="font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="border: none; display: inline-block; padding: 0cm;"><span style="font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><span style="color: #454545;">With Youth this all was just not happening and at first it was making me rather nervous :). Youth asked me to be more spontaneous so we would usually sit down together and listen to the basic backing track that he had prepared for the session earlier in the day. It was supposed to help me to get into the vibe. I have to say the first few sessions were quite stressful as I was just super nervous which was making my voice to shake so the performance wasn’t very good. But later on I just got somehow comfortable with being spontaneous. I did a lot of improvising on the basic vocal lines which I improved later by adding some harmonies. So at the end I had some stuff actually written. Especially when it came to writing lyrics in a fictional language. :) Youth helped me to find my own musical language and taught me to trust my voice. Also he taught me that during improvisation if you really calm down:) lots of magic can happen…And it did. I think the album we made is truly magical. :)</span></span></span></span></p><p style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br /></p><p style="font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="border: none; display: inline-block; padding: 0cm;"><span style="font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><b><span style="color: #454545;">5) While everyone is awaiting the return to normality, where we can attend live concerts many artists are reaching their fans by video streaming. So I am really looking forward to that!!</span></span></span></span></p><p style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br /></p><p style="font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="border: none; display: inline-block; padding: 0cm;"><span style="font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><b><span style="color: #454545;">6) What is your favourite performance of your career so far and where would be your dream stage to play?</span></b></span></span></span></p><p style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br /></p><p style="font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="border: none; display: inline-block; padding: 0cm;"><span style="font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><span style="color: #454545;">My most favourite performance was in the Netherlands at a festival called Castlefest (Summer edition) in 2018 which is actually my most favourite festival ever and I can’t wait to be there again at some point!! The whole Castlefest is just a huge super-spectacular thing, amazing people around you, beautiful scenery, gorgeous costumes ( as it is a fantasy & music festival) and four days of a total paradise!! I have to strongly recommend it to everyone! It is a festival for all age groups by the way so no-one is excluded there which is what I love about it most. <span style="font-size: medium;">With the landslide of emails,
shares and media streams of new music, it’s becoming harder and
harder to scratch the surface of music releases. So this list of no
particular order is quite frankly a selection of releases that either
impressed me or I repeatedly played on the commute to and from the
day job.</span></p>

<p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Back
in March the was a bit of a buzz about this album, with many saying
the Orb were back to their best. Although I really liked the

</p>
<p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="font-size: medium;">From a glance this latest release from Parisian Kick Bong appears to reflect the emotions felt through this period of
lockdowns and isolation. The opening track ‘We Will Survive’
paints contrasts of light and dark and when the beat kicks in, in the
later third of the piece it explodes into life. ‘Strange Days’
begins in a melodic fashion reminiscent of the steel pan sound, and
there’s no rush to apply the four-by-four with this track either.
However, when he does it’s pulls together into an impressive
melodic techno track. The mood gets darker and more atmospheric with ‘Let
Me Fly’ providing a sense of winding up, and those little
melodic flutters and guitar licks reaching for the desired release. </span>
</p>
<p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br />
</p>
<p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="font-size: medium;">There’s
a lovely balance of heavenly synths, circling loops and French spoken
word that sits this track ‘Tu me Manques’ somewhere between 90’s
progressive techno and the 80’s synth pioneers Visage. The title
track begins dark and gritty with melodic bleeps running across. It morphs along route, throwing in some Cure like guitar riffs and the result is another wonderful piece. Whilst ‘Happy Inside’ is a bit of a
plodder it runs the gauntlet of atmospheres and sounds you find
through out the album. </span><span style="font-size: 14pt;">The
pace slows down more on ‘The Calling’ where angelic voices and ambient
tones drift in and out of atmospheric passages. Which leads nicely
into the final track ‘Waiting Better’ a chilled piece of
electronica with flutters of drums and flute like synths and chimes.</span></p>

<p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="font-size: medium;">I
first came across the Orb among the shelves of a record store. It
wasn’t an underground store that specialised in the latest imported
12’s, just a regular high street chain. The title of the item
caught my attention ‘The huge ever pulsating brain that rules from
the centre of the ultraworld’ I surveyed the listening booths and
decided I wouldn’t bother queuing as with a title like this it must
be good. I wasn’t wrong and for a few years I was bagging their
audio and visual output, as well as enjoying them live at
Glastonbury. Over the years I’ve dipped in and out of their
releases and seen them perform on numerous occasions. There seemed to
be a buzz about their album ‘</span><span style="font-size: medium;">Abolition
of the royal familia’ and although I really liked ‘Chill Out
World’ I could see why many were saying they were back to their

<p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Now
this release is a compilation of Orb re-mixes that for the most part
have been released on various formats over the years, packaged into
one handy playable album. Now like any artists who have been around
this long they have their die-hard fans, who will already be eagerly
awaiting their pre-order to be shipping to their doormats. So this
review is aimed at those like myself, who like the Orb rather than the Orbsessed fanatics. </span>

<p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Now
I’ve had this sat on my harddrive for a few months, and I have
spent a fair amount of time comparing this collection to the
originals I didn’t know, that I could source. I found it a mixed
bag there’s </span><span style="font-size: medium;">artists
we all know such as Coldcut and System 7 where the re-mixes are great
alternatives. Obvious links to fans such as Youth & Gaudi,
Killing Joke and the Transit Kings. Some were completely new
introductions to me,as in the case of OMFO’s ‘Sirtaki on Mars’,
which is a great piece of Russian chill out in it’s own merit and I
loved the result. Whereas with the Gyuto Monks of Tibet’s ‘Legend
of the Yogi’ I far preferred the original, but never-the-less was glad of the
introduction. But all in all this is a collection that you can easily
play through, with some great tracks and if you so desire a good reference point to
explore further. </span>

</p>
<p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Although
I’ve always been partial to Orchid-Star both live and recorded,
</span><span style="font-size: medium;">It’s been a while
since I played the Faster CD. </span><span style="font-size: medium;">Now
</span><span style="font-size: medium;">although I can see the
cover </span><span style="font-size: medium;">has</span><span style="font-size: medium;">
had a make over that will catch the eye, it’s the content that
counts. </span><span style="font-size: medium;">So without
further ado I’ll address the results of pressing play.</span></p>
<p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="font-size: medium;">The
album opens with the slow version of ‘Brighter’, which begins in
an ethereal fashion before flickering as if it’s about to take off,
then settles into a funky world fusion with melodic keys and
vocals. Whilst band </span><span style="font-size: medium;">percussionist</span><span style="font-size: medium;">
</span><span style="font-size: medium;">and DJ</span><span style="font-size: medium;">
Sean Spindrift takes ‘Shouty One’ into the realms of </span><span style="font-size: medium;">the</span><span style="font-size: medium;">
</span><span style="font-size: medium;">uplifting progressive
psy-trance that he’s know for. Whilst Squazoid flirts with the
tempos </span><span style="font-size: medium;">of ‘A Better
Ride’</span><span style="font-size: medium;">, at times
letting the vocals play out and at others applying plenty of fx and
squelch.</span></p><p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></p><p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="BLOG_video_class" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/ny8kTOBjW1k" width="320" youtube-src-id="ny8kTOBjW1k"></iframe></div><br /><p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br />
</p>
<p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="font-size: medium;">The
dnb mix of ‘Surya’ is a lovely piece of Asian electronica that
centres around the vocals, a perfect tune for a stomp in the sun. </span><span style="font-size: medium;">In
comparison the Trancient Dream mix of ‘Puja’ is more of light and
chilled tribal plodder. The atmosphere changes once again with Pete
Ardon and Sand-Ra’s mix of ‘</span><span style="font-size: medium;">Lotus
Bloom’, which is on the whole a straight up world music track.
However, that’s not to say it hasn’t got some interesting and
unique nuances about it. The mood then switches again as Sean
re-appears adding some punch to the melodic, with another progressive
psy take on ‘Barefoot’.</span></p>
<p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="font-size: medium;">After
all these </span><span style="font-size: medium;">twists and
turns of style </span><span style="font-size: medium;">the last
three settle somewhat of an Orchid-Star formula</span><span style="font-size: medium;">
with the Moai System remix of ‘Prchla, a cocktail of wonderful
vocals, reggae riddims and gypsy violin. I could very well use the
same description for the first section of the live version of
‘Orchid-Ska’, but as the title promises it picks up the pace with
a unique ska fusion. </span><span style="font-size: medium;">Whilst
the finale Inne’s Thankyou mix of ‘Dans La’ is somewhat slower
with a touch of guitar.</span></p><p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="font-size: medium;">To summarise this collection with it's fresh lick of paint, displays both the uniqueness and diversity that Orchid-Star offers. I've got a few personal faviourites in here and they may well differ from yours. However, if you're unfamiliar with the band why not dive in and have a listen and keep your eyes peeled on the circuit when the festivals return.</span></p>

<span style="color: #262626;"><span style="font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;"><span style="font-size: 14pt;">I
am an ordinary person, like many others. Born in Russia, in the
outback. From an early age there was a love for drawing. Around 1990,
music appeared in my life in the form of a cassette recorder. And
there was a lot of music, so I collected it. Probably at that moment,
my long journey in the world of sounds began. To tell everyone about
the whole journey, a separate interview would be needed for this
(laughing).</span></span></span></p>
<p lang="en-US" style="line-height: 0.4cm; margin-bottom: 0cm; margin-top: 0.49cm;">

music productions often take the theme of Space. What influenced you
in taking this approach to your compositions?</b></span></span></span></p>
</li></ol>
<p lang="en-US" style="line-height: 0.4cm; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br />
</p>
<p lang="en-US" style="line-height: 0.4cm; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="color: #262626;"><span style="font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;"><span style="font-size: 14pt;">Thirst
for the unknown. Space is a mystery. Even though we know about it,
how far we can see it in powerful telescopes, we still don't know
anything about it. Space is a frightening beauty, bewitching and
bewitching. All people live under the same sky. All the people are
with him, and whatever the space is, it is of interest to all.</span></span></span></p>
<p lang="en-US" style="line-height: 0.4cm; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br />
</p>
<p lang="en-US" style="line-height: 0.4cm; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="color: #262626;"><span style="font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;"><span style="font-size: 14pt;">I
unite people through my music. Any person, with any religion, any
views, will love space and my music about space. It is neutral for
everyone. She lulling and I just like to create it. I feel too close
to different worlds about which I can tell, including space.</span></span></span></p>
<p lang="en-US" style="line-height: 0.4cm; margin-bottom: 0cm; margin-top: 0.49cm;">
<span style="color: #262626;"><span style="font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;"><span style="font-size: 14pt;">I
think someday people all over the planet will hate my music. This
will happen if one-day space brings us sorrow (laughs). Before that
happens, space is a peaceful, a silent giant looking down at us.</span></span></span></p>
<p lang="en-US" style="line-height: 0.4cm; margin-bottom: 0cm;">

another reoccurring theme is nature. How does your approach differ
to creating these compositions?</b></span></span></span></p>

</p>
<p lang="en-US" style="line-height: 0.4cm; margin-bottom: 0cm; margin-top: 0.49cm;">
<span style="color: #262626;"><span style="font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;"><span style="font-size: 14pt;">That's
right. Nature is what excites me just as much. If space is something
mysterious and inaccessible, then we can see nature now, we know it
very well. We interact with her every day. It is clear to us.</span></span></span></p>
<p lang="en-US" style="line-height: 0.4cm; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br />
</p>
<p lang="en-US" style="line-height: 0.4cm; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="color: #262626;"><span style="font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;"><span style="font-size: 14pt;">For
the music of space I use specific sounds, more often electronic, but
soft. Then for nature I use sounds that we hear more often. If space
needs a smooth atmosphere, then for nature I often use atmospheric
pads with rustling sounds, with sounds that more closely reflect
nature. As a painter, I try to visualize sounds. Whether or not I can
succeed is for the listener to decide.</span></span></span></p>

<p lang="en-US" style="line-height: 0.4cm; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="color: #262626;"><span style="font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;"><span style="font-size: 14pt;">Sure.
If anyone thinks that I have a large studio with expensive equipment,
they will be very wrong. If we speak in such a way as a studio, then
I do not have one. I have a workplace. The place where I create the
alchemy of sounds. But, there is nothing unusual about it. There are
no expensive devices. A standard set of necessary things to make
music professionally. Sound monitoring, cheap but professional
headphones, sound card, digital programs. Several musical
instruments, including those made by myself.</span></span></span></p>
<p lang="en-US" style="line-height: 0.4cm; margin-bottom: 0cm; margin-top: 0.49cm;">
<span style="color: #262626;"><span style="font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;"><span style="font-size: 14pt;">You
don't need to have the most expensive equipment to become a
professional musician. First of all, you need to be a professional
musician.</span></span></span></p>
<p lang="en-US" style="line-height: 0.4cm; margin-bottom: 0cm; margin-top: 0.49cm;">
<span style="color: #262626;"><span style="font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;"><span style="font-size: 14pt;">20
years ago I could write the music "stick on seashell"
(laugh). And it worked out pretty well. Now imagine what I can do
with sounds, with everything that I have now? This is a huge scope
for creativity. Thanks to the 21st century of high technology. If
they put me in the coolest studio, then it seems to me I would
dissolve in it and become music myself (laughs).</span></span></span></p>
<p lang="en-US" style="line-height: 0.4cm; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br />
</p>
<ol start="5">
<li><p lang="en-US" style="line-height: 0.4cm; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="color: #262626;"><span style="font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;"><span style="font-size: 14pt;"><b>What
advice would you give to those starting out in electronic music?</b></span></span></span></p>
</li></ol>
<p lang="en-US" style="line-height: 0.4cm; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br />
</p>
<p lang="en-US" style="line-height: 0.4cm; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="color: #262626;"><span style="font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;"><span style="font-size: 14pt;">Of
course I can. Musical life is ordered, and it will weed out the wheat
from the chaff. And if you are not ready to become something more
than just a person, then you cannot. Many break down and chuck it in
half way. Man is used to living with illusions and hopes. And at some
point, the hope was not justified, and the illusion collapsed with
pain. A person gives up his hobby and becomes ordinary. So I'll put
it this way:</span></span></span></p>
<p lang="en-US" style="line-height: 0.4cm; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br />
</p>
<p lang="en-US" style="line-height: 0.4cm; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="color: #262626;"><span style="font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;"><span style="font-size: 14pt;">1.
Never think of your hobby as your earnings. Creativity comes first,
then earnings. You will be surprised when you find out (maybe many
years later) that what you love so much (to make music) has begun to
bring you money. What would you have noticed and loved is the
audience, you must first make a qualitative and unusual music. But
don't think about how much you will earn. This is confusing to many.</span></span></span></p>
<p lang="en-US" style="line-height: 0.4cm; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br />
</p>
<p lang="en-US" style="line-height: 0.4cm; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="color: #262626;"><span style="font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;"><span style="font-size: 14pt;">2.
Practice music as much as you need. Do not force yourself, but do not
infringe on your desires.</span></span></span></p>
<p lang="en-US" style="line-height: 0.4cm; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br />
</p>
<p lang="en-US" style="line-height: 0.4cm; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="color: #262626;"><span style="font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;"><span style="font-size: 14pt;">3.
Invite people to listen to your music. Ask for reviews. Ask for
honest reviews. Respond to criticism correctly. Try to make the music
better than it is. Feedback is very important for a musician.
Positive or negative. The main thing here is to perceive it
correctly. Feedback should be constructive.</span></span></span></p>

we will continue the long series of Cosmos Episodes. As planned,
these are 24 parts. So far, only 11 are ready. Let's not guess. This
is an ambitious project. I would like to make 24 hours of music so
that someone can listen to it non-stop. Although not sure if anyone

Quite frankly I can see why </span></span><span style="font-size: medium;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">he

</span></span><span style="font-size: medium;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">although

ambient interludes, but rather a progression of numerous ideas and
techniques. In addition there’s also a shorter DJ friendly radio
edit which will keep them happy and well as aid promotion. Now
there’s an interesting background to the production of this </span></span><span style="font-size: medium;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">aptly

<span style="font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;"><span style="font-size: 14pt;"><b><span style="color: #1a1a1a;">1)
Firstly thank you for taking the time to answer these questions. Can
you tell us a little about when you took your first steps into music
production?</span></b></span></span></p><p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br />
</p><p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;"><span style="font-size: 14pt;"><span style="color: #1a1a1a;">I
first got into production through being in bands with my older
brother Tom. He used to record on a Fostex 4 track recorder before
developing a passion for electronic music and was composing his own
music within Cubase, he managed to study it at A level on a
scholarship to the local public school as our school didn’t have
the technology or teachers. I was luckily able to follow suit and
spent most of my final years at school in the studio making mistakes! </span></span></span></p><p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;"><span style="font-size: 14pt;"><span style="color: #1a1a1a;">I used to spend hours and hours creating unusable beats but that’s
what it’s all about when you’re first starting, I learnt more
from trial and error than from any formal education I received and
continued experimenting with various DAWs throughout my late teens
resting on Ableton but switching to Logic when I arrived at Youth’s.</span></span></span></p><p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br />
</p><p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;"><span style="font-size: 14pt;"><b><span style="color: #1a1a1a;">2)
You worked as a sound engineer in Youth’s studio. Can you tell us
how that came about and the most important things you learnt in the
role.</span></b></span></span></p><p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br />
</p><p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;"><span style="font-size: 14pt;"><span style="color: #1a1a1a;">Again,
this came about by being in a band with my brother, after years of
listening to Killing Joke as well as Shpongle and Ott, Tom found
himself in a band with Youth’s nephew, which was crazy at the time,
we had no idea of his connection to Youth or the connection between
those artists. Fast forward a couple years and we were showing our
demos to Youth with the potential of recording our EP in his Spanish
studio, unfortunately the band fizzled out but Tom reconnected after
his degree and was offered work experience, once he had his foot in
the door I dropped out of university straight away to sleep on Tom’s
floor and work my way up from tea boy. </span></span></span></p><p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;"><span style="font-size: 14pt;"><span style="color: #1a1a1a;">I learnt a lot about the
different personality types of musicians and artists in general,
Youth’s place had a constant stream of various creative sorts
coming in and out every week from major celebrities to quirky
leftfield thinkers, being able to handle an artist’s ego and seeing
where they struggle shows you a lot about your own creative process.
It was also invaluable seeing the discipline of writing/recording
songs every day and getting into the healthy habit of finishing
projects.</span></span></span></p><p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br />
</p><p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;"><span style="font-size: 14pt;"><b><span style="color: #1a1a1a;">3)
How did you meet Simon Posford and why did you make the move to work
with Twisted Records?</span></b></span></span></p><p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br />
</p><p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;"><span style="font-size: 14pt;"><span style="color: #1a1a1a;">Our
first proper conversation was at Youth’s festival at his studio in
Spain, it was only brief but we seemed to get along. I was in a
difficult place, knowing I wanted to do music and being in, what on
the outside, seemed to be the perfect place but I didn’t feel there
was enough care over the art having to do things so quickly and I
didn’t want to be an engineer when I had far stronger aspirations
to be an artist. </span></span></span></p><p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;"><span style="font-size: 14pt;"><span style="color: #1a1a1a;">I left Youth’s without knowing Simon would offer
me work and I spent half a year taking time to take stock of how far
I’d come and remembering what it is I love about music, it was a
life changing moment when Simon sent me that offer!</span></span></span></p><p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br />
</p><p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;"><span style="font-size: 14pt;"><b><span style="color: #1a1a1a;">4)
You’ve just released the Sphongle Re-mixes. How did you find that
in comparison to producing your own compositions and what’s up next
for Cosmic Trigger?</span></b></span></span></p><p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br />
</p><p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;"><span style="font-size: 14pt;"><span style="color: #1a1a1a;">At
first it was an extremely daunting proposition, I’d loved Shpongle
for so many years I wasn’t sure if I could do it justice but I knew
I had it in me so I strove and spent night after night,
experimenting, tweaking and trying mix after mix until it started
taking on a life and sound of it’s own. It’s the most considered
and realised piece of music I’ve ever created, my debut album was
released in a hurry and was done at a far more stressful time in my
life. The trust and space Simon and Twisted gave me with these
remixes was the perfect environment for something organic and true to
grow from. </span></span></span></p><p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;"><span style="font-size: 14pt;"><span style="color: #1a1a1a;">Next on the Cosmic Trigger agenda is an EP followed by an
album next year probably, I’ve got so many new ideas and techniques
from doing these remixes, I’m excited to get stuck in.</span></span></span></p><p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br />
</p><p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;"><span style="font-size: 14pt;"><b><span style="color: #1a1a1a;">5)
What music genres or musicians influenced you outside of the
psychedelic scene?</span></b></span></span></p><p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br />
</p><p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;"><span style="font-size: 14pt;"><span style="color: #1a1a1a;">There
are really just too many to list to feel I’ve done them and myself
anything close to justice but I’ll share a few - I’m a massive
fan of krautrock, the original 70’s German experimental bands like
Neu!, Can, Ashra and also the modern take on the sound such as
Kikagaku Moyo and Follakzoid. I’m a sucker for strange time
signatures that has been fuelled recently by extensive listening to
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard (as well as Shpongle of course!).
</span></span></span></p><p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;"><span style="font-size: 14pt;"><span style="color: #1a1a1a;">Led Zeppelin and Nirvana were two of my biggest influences being
in bands growing up along with garage rock bands such as the 13th
Floor Elevators. I’ve always had a soft spot for quite moody music
too like Sigur Ròs, Radiohead and early Verve. </span></span></span>
</p><p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br />
</p><p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;"><span style="font-size: 14pt;"><b><span style="color: #1a1a1a;">6)
Are there any new artists or genres you see making an impact in the
near future?</span></b></span></span></p><p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br />
</p><p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;"><span style="font-size: 14pt;"><span style="color: #1a1a1a;">I’m
a huge fan of Koan Sound, they’re already pretty huge but I think
they have the potential for even greater success, I also love Bwoy De
Bhajan’s sound, he creates a lovely blend of organic and cinematic
soundscapes with a lot of panache. I also have a hunch that the
Neo-Psychedelic Rock scene is still yet to see its high water mark,
there are a lot of interesting bands on the rise in that scene.</span></span></span></p><p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br />
</p><p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;"><span style="font-size: 14pt;"><b><span style="color: #1a1a1a;">7)
What advice would you give to up-and-coming producers or sound
engineers?</span></b></span></span></p><p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br />
</p><p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;"><span style="font-size: 14pt;"><span style="color: #1a1a1a;">If
you’re serious about it spend everyday putting in those hours,
there really is no substitution for hard work, simple as that! There
are plenty of good resources on YouTube to learn the basics and
improve technique, anyone can do it if they really go for it and
trust in themselves through all the mistakes and agonising times when
it seems that nothing is ever going to improve. </span></span></span></p><p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;"><span style="font-size: 14pt;"><span style="color: #1a1a1a;">But most importantly
it really is about having fun and not feeling the need to adhere to
any strict rules of production, style or tempo, our individual tastes
means we won’t all sound the same and neither should we!</span></span></span></p><p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br />
</p><p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;"><span style="font-size: 14pt;"><b><span style="color: #1a1a1a;">8)
There is a lot of doom and gloom floating about regarding the
entertainment industry at the moment from the income for artists with
streaming and the lack of gigs and possible closures of venues with
lock-down situations. Are there any rays of light you can see for the
future in the music industry?</span></b></span></span></p><p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">

</p><p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;"><span style="font-size: 14pt;"><span style="color: #1a1a1a;">I
think music will always find a way, even if it takes a while to
return to anything like what we’ve been used to over the years
there will always be new art and people yearning for celebration and
release in sound. </span></span></span>

</p>
<p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="font-size: medium;">The
format here is somewhat different to the albums and long mixes that
have come out on Cosmicleaf this year. This release contains two
instrumental tracks, which are followed by vocal versions of the
pieces. Effectively, a single that delivers 34 minutes of music.</span></p>
<p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br />
</p>
<p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="font-size: medium;">We
begin with ‘Night Starry Sky’ which weaves a beautiful journey of
eastern flutes, ambient pads and choral voices. </span><span style="font-size: medium;">The
following piece ‘Call of the Wind’ is very much in the same field
of play, this time with eastern strings and melodic piano and just
edges it for me.</span></p>
<p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br />
</p>
<p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Now
the vocal version of ‘Night Starry Sky’ isn’t a song as such,
there seems to be more delay and FX added to the piece, and perhaps
some processed ethereal voices. Now I’m pretty certain the Indian
vocals on ‘Call of the Wind’ are from a track I already have, but
can’t quite put my finger on. Now that’s not a bad thing, as it’s
actually my favourite track on the whole release.</span></p>

</p>
<p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="font-size: medium;">This
latest release from Toby Marks is described as a contemplative
affair, full of contrasts of light and shade reflecting the turmoil
in which it was made. </span><span style="font-size: medium;">It’s
l</span><span style="font-size: medium;">argely beat-free,
which he hopes will bring a little light and peace to you in these
troubled times.</span></p>
<p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br />
</p>
<p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="font-size: medium;">The
opening track ‘Floatless’ begins with the stereotypical field
recording </span><span style="font-size: medium;">of </span><span style="font-size: medium;">running
water, and the feeling of nature remains, with those synth voices
that sound like they are pushing air. The other accompanying synths
sounds utilised, have a lovely retro feel that are reminiscent of the
90’s. </span><span style="font-size: medium;">The second
track ‘Slow Gravity’ moves away from the beat-free expectation.
It’s a slow chugger that </span><span style="font-size: medium;">to
be frank </span><span style="font-size: medium;">takes a little
time to unfurl. However, once it does it’s a lovely eastern
flavoured number, with haunting flutes, strings and ethnic vocals.
There’s eerie almost ear screeching intro, with what maybe
distorted bagpipes </span><span style="font-size: medium;">on</span><span style="font-size: medium;">
‘Yesterday and most of today’</span><span style="font-size: medium;">
I</span><span style="font-size: medium;">n fact he packs in a
fair amount to such a short piece with narrative snippets, car alarms
and a saw. </span>
</p>
<p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br />
</p>
<p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Were
back to those field recording staples, </span><span style="font-size: medium;">this
time</span><span style="font-size: medium;"> with birdsong
</span><span style="font-size: medium;">applied to the </span><span style="font-size: medium;">intro
</span><span style="font-size: medium;">of</span><span style="font-size: medium;">
‘All Day in Summer’. </span><span style="font-size: medium;">He
then</span><span style="font-size: medium;"> add</span><span style="font-size: medium;">s</span><span style="font-size: medium;">
some female spoken word and slowly played piano, before the
accompanying strings and ethereal vocals shine some light into the
melancholy. This is the sort of track </span><span style="font-size: medium;">for
me </span><span style="font-size: medium;">that </span><span style="font-size: medium;">is
</span><span style="font-size: medium;">just perfect to wake up
to. Then for the finale, is the title track </span><span style="font-size: medium;">itself
which features Esbe</span><span style="font-size: medium;">.
For those unaware Kintsugi is the Japanese method of repairing and
restoring pottery. The impression I got from this ambient number is
that a dark tone is set under the Japanese dialogue and then the
synths and vocals represent the rays of sunshine breaking through. Most probably with the aim of the music to repair and restore.</span></p>

the proceedings. Somatoast takes an ambient approach and strips the
piece back, bringing the ethereal backing vocals to the forefront of
his version. </span></span></span></span></span></span></span><span style="font-variant: normal;"><span style="color: #242a65;"><span style="font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><span style="letter-spacing: normal;"><span style="font-style: normal;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">
Tribone & Liquid Bloom create a dark brooding atmosphere
initally, but they soon beef up the percussion and bass, whilst
applying fx to the ethnic vocals. Mindex takes a very similar
approach with a dark bass heavy version juxtaposed with the clarinet,
flutes and those ethereal tones.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p>

by Design hat and teams up with Tribone & Liquid Bloom for a
two-step breakz affair, that switches back and forth between the
light and harmonious and the dark and heavy. Pan Electric on the
other hand utilises the ethereal vocals and melodic strings, adding a
funky bass and organ which takes the piece into a completely
different direction than his predecessors. Seb changes hats once
again this time under his Digitalis pseudonym he slowly drifts
through the clarinet and begins to twist the FX moving to dark and
dirty territories. To conclude there’s a continuous mix for those
who mind the gaps.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p>

<p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="font-size: 14pt;">Anyone with any inkling of the
Psy-Chill scene will be aware of Sphongle the down-tempo project of
Simon Posford and Raja Ram. A project that created a cult like
following of their releases and live shows.</span></p><p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="font-size: 14pt;"><br /></span></p>
<p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Jamie
Grashion A.K.A. Cosmic Trigger is the latest addition to Twisted
Records roster of artists. After working with mulitple artists as an
engineer in Youth’s studio before becoming Simon Posford’s
assistant. After impressing Simon with his work on the Red Rocks tour
in 2019 he offered him the opportunity to re-mix some of their
tracks. </span>
</p>
<p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br />
</p>
<p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="font-size: medium;">This
selection of six tracks begins with ‘I am You’, where he drops the
spoken word of the original and instead places the focus on an
ambient intro soom accompanied by a guitar loop. Before twisting the fx and bending
the pitch and slowly but surely letting the track loose. At twice
the length of the original it’s an interesting alternative that is extremely well produced. Next up is ‘Nothing is Something Worth
Doing’ and where the original (as the title suggests) was one
suitably designed for listening in a hammock. Jamie flips the coin
adding a vibrancy without adding pace, whilst keeping the elements of
the original. </span>
</p>
<p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br />
</p>
<p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Moving
on to ‘No Stone Unturned’ while the folk like vocal is dropped
and more up-to-date psychedelic style applied you can still feel the
vibe of the original in the under current. On ‘How the Jellyfish
jumped over the Mountain’ the original chilled intro led to
bubbling fx, a bit of drive and that flamenco break. Here the brakes
are applied and once again creates the polar opposite for the ears of the listener.</span></p>
<p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br />
</p>
<p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="font-size: medium;">There
is no change to this approach with ‘Juggling Molecules’ where the
original started chilled and dropped once again, after the percussive
crescendo. Here the percussion starts from the off, then hits harder
until the finale where it all comes together in a spectacular
fashion. The original ‘Aquatic Garden of Extra-Celestial Delights’
was a slow burner that covered some length. Here your instantly taken
off on a melodic ride that’s highly enjoyable, before it drops
hard, dark and suitably twisted, nothing short of pure excellence.</span></p>

<p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br />
</p>
<p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">Laurent Schieber
continues to create his productions in the style of his musical
heroes of the Berlin school of electronic music, utilising the
classic synthesizers sounds of the Moog, Jupiter 8 and Arp Odyssey to
name a few. He also emulates the likes of Klaus Schulze and Tangerine
Dream in the length of pieces with these three tracks covering over
an hour of recording time.</p>
<p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br /></p><p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">The first piece ‘Experimental’ features sequenced loops very much in the fashion of Tangerine Dream and you’re in for the long haul before those angelic voices make an appearance. There's an equal balance of sequenced loops over lush synth waves the on the second track ‘Float Among the Stars’ which is the shortest of the three at just under 15 minutes. Whilst the brakes are applied to the finale ‘Beyond from the Beyond’ which unfurls little sequences across a lush
ambient undercurrent that rises and falls slowly as the piece
progresses. This is a journey into space that’s in no hurry so sit back and enjoy the sound that Laurent bathes you in. </p>
<p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br /></p><p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">You could argue
there’s nothing new about this release. However, it’s not meant
to be. It’s simply Laurent’s passion to emulate his heroes that
shines through in his productions. To be honest it’s not far
removed from the current Space Ambient scene, except for the lack of
the four by four basslines often employed.</p>

<p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Taking
a step back from recent forays into Future Garage, Obsqure returns
nearer home with this new single and once again conjures up a magical
soundtrack of the Middle East. </span>

</p>
<p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Opening
with ‘Mamulks’ here he provides a perfect balance of deep piano
chords, shuffling rhythms and eastern flutes. Whilst, the following piece ‘Dusk’
contains all of it’s predecessors elements and charm, he injects a faster bassline
to carry the journey onwards. </span>

</p>
<p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Last
but not least, the title track is as it suggests yet again another eastern gem.
Slightly lighter on the piano and settling somewhere in pace between
the others. All in all a wonderful musical excursion that is a pleasure to the ears.</span></p>

</p>
<p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Over
the years I’ve encountered people with all kinds of tastes in music
and growing up I had friends who although were into sci-fi, held the
view electronic music wasn’t real music. I never got my head around
this as the atmosphere synths provided for these soundtracks could
provide atmospheres of weightlessness in space as well as dramatic
suspense. This Russian producer excels at those atmospheres in his
space themed compositions so I had high expectations with the second
chapter of Destiny.</span></p>
<p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br />
</p>
<p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="font-size: medium;">When
the mood grabs you to listen to some space ambient this collection
will certainly do the trick. It’s the kind of album you really want
to listen to from start to finish and not necessarily one that’s
easy to pick a favourite. If I was pushed I would probably plump for
‘Negative Charge’ which features some appealing synth sounds that
flow lovingly over the sequenced sounds beneath. However, nothing on
the album disappointed me and each track has it’s own appeal.</span></p>

<span style="font-size: 14pt;">The debut album from
Equanimous features collaborations with 11 artists over 9 tracks that
aims to bridge blissful melodies and organic sounds with rhythmic
bass. Personally, I found this album a bit of mixed bag, at times it
had a pop edge which in all fairness will probably appeal to a wider
audience. </span></p><p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="font-size: 14pt;"><br /></span></p><p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="font-size: 14pt;">However, that said there are still goodies in this bag that
appealed to me. The opening track ‘Arise’ with Skysia for
instance leans slightly less on the bass than some of the others and
features melodic piano and angelic voices. Whilst, the oohing
meanderings of Cyndy Fike work well juxtaposed against the tribal
rhythms of ‘Dreamality’ a collaboration with Bass Looper.</span></p><p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br />

released on 7th September 2000, “Electronomicon” shows Pitch
Black developing their deep dubby sound further by creating long and
involved song structures that traverse a range of sonic experiences.
The resultant album journeys from organic ambience and layered
soundscapes to skanking keyboards, cutting acid riffs and thumping
rhythmic grooves, with dub being the glue that holds it all
together.</span></span></span></span><span style="font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;"><span style="font-size: 14pt;"><br />

<p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="font-size: medium;">After
sixteen years two of Cosmicleaf’s longest running artists, that are
widely known and respected in the chill out scene, have finally come
together in the studio to produce a melodic fusion of post-rock and
minimal techno single.</span></p>
<p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br />
</p>
<p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="font-size: medium;">The
title track ‘La Nuit’ is a synth driven piece of four by four
techno that fuses post-rock guitars with melodic riffs that carries
you along a wonderful journey through this night. Whilst
surprisingly I found the flipside ‘The Day After’ begins darker
and slower, although it’s a builder that contains melodic elements
and after a sultry French female vocal intro, takes off with ethereal
voices.</span></p>

<p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Following
on from previous albums Andrew continues drafting together piano
notes, guitar drones, synths and field recordings to create what is
becoming a signature sound within minimalist ambience.</span></p>
<p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br />
</p>
<p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="font-size: medium;">We
get underway with ‘Observers and Airmen’ which combines warm
synths with the broken radio samples of airmen and sparse piano
notes, immediately setting the atmosphere fans have come to expect.
It doesn’t take long till we reach the title track which oozes
tranquillity into the ears, with it’s combination of atmospheric
synths, guitar drones, gentle piano keys and a wonderful bass
clarinet provided by Bill Howgego.</span></p>
<p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br />
</p>
<p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="font-size: medium;">The
remainder of the album maintains the general ebb and flow of the
music, providing an hour and 23 minutes of audio relaxation. Fans may
recall the track ‘The Garden Reveals Itself’ from his 2018 album
‘Evenfall’. Well it’s back (or at least the Night Mix is) and
whereas the initial version was bright, with crisp and clear lyrics
provided by the poet Maria Stadnika. This version is darker, quieter, with the lyrics whispered in an almost haunting fashion.</span></p>

<span style="font-size: 14pt;">Space is quite often the theme
with Eguana productions. This time the emphasis is going by the
titles is clearly on the natural world. One of the aspects I like
about Eguana that sets him apart from other Space Ambient producers
is he doesn’t just set a downtempo four by four beat. Sometimes the
drum patterns appear on the surface quite simple, but at times there
are often delicate little nuances that are quite intricate. Then
there is the ambience that he layers on top which themed with space
or the natural world set you adrift on a gloriously relaxed journey.</span></p><p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br />
</p><p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
</p><p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="font-size: 14pt;">The
first signs of shaking me out of this journey and grabbing my
attention is on ‘Wormwood’ where the drum pattern is somewhat
like a marching band, or at least a band marching slowly. This is
followed by ‘The Smell of Moss’ which is my favourite on the
album. The ambience of the track shrouds you, while sparse deep bass
notes eventually lead to the plodding drums and laid back piano keys.
Although overall every track plays it’s part in the journey another
I especially love is ‘Falling Stars’ where trip-hop beats sway
like a boat, at times gently and others lifting on a higher wave.
While the sound fx spring off those beats in perfect unison</span></p><p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="font-size: 14pt;"><br /></span></p>

early days of it’s conception, and he’s back once more with five
fresh dubs inspired by recent events, his wife Lauren Drescher’s
Zoonotic print series (the Pangolin is utilised for the cover art
</span><span style="font-size: large;">)
and our rapacious approach to the natural world. </span></p><p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><a href="https://www.ldrescher.com/zoonotic/" style="font-size: large;">https://www.ldrescher.com/zoonotic/</a></p>

begin the journey with ‘Chiff-Chaff Dub’ where I’d hazard a
guess the bird song featured is a Chiff-Chaff and hence the name. The
piece is a wonderful bass heavy plodding fusion of electro-dub and
Indian instruments. While the brakes are applied to the vocoder vocal
‘Forty Days and Forty Nights Dub’ there is no compromise on the
bass.</span></p>
<p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></p><p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="font-size: large;">The
title track ‘Pangolin Dub’ the Pangolin is the most poached and
trafficked creature on earth, for use in Chinese medicine and whose
meat is considered a delicacy for the wealthy in China and Vietnam.
As sad and hopeless the plight of the Pangolin is, the track itself
isn’t really melancholic just a stereo-typical piece of dub reggae
with a touch of horn accompaniment and tribal percussion.</span></p>
<p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></p><p style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="font-size: large;">This
is followed by ‘Sit You Down, Father, Rest You Dub’ which begins
as a rather pleasant acoustic reggae number, then the bass drops hard
and he flirts with harmonica and guitar in places. To see us out is
‘Smash the System Dub’ now whether this refers to the sound
system, a political system or both is up to you to interpret. Either
way, it’s another piece of bass heavy dub peppered with fx and
loops that compliments it’s predecessors perfectly.</span></p>
